2008 Marquee Events

Capitol Volleyball Classic, February 16th – 18th, 2008: (D.C. Convention Center)

This annual volleyball tournament will bring over 250 youth girls teams to the District of Columbia over President’s Day Weekend in 2008. The tournament features some of the nation’s best teams, and serves as an important college recruitment tool as well as an event to grow the sport of volleyball in the region.

NCAA Men’s Basketball First & Second Rounds, March 20th & 22nd, 2008: (Verizon Center)

Washington D.C. will host one of sports most exciting events, the first and second rounds of the Men’s Basketball NCAA Championship Tournament. The Verizon Center will be home to the tournament’s six thrilling games over two days, which will no doubt be one of the toughest tickets to get in town!

SunTrust National Marathon, March 29th, 2008: (District of Columbia)
In its third year, the SunTrust National Marathon and Half Marathon anticipates welcoming 8000 runners to hit the streets of the District of Columbia for a 26.2 mile highlight of 6 of the city’s 8 wards. In addition to exciting corporate involvement, the SunTrust National Marathon and Half Marathon is proud to provide new community programming to District residents, further connecting the race to its city.

The Land Rover America’s Polo Cup, May 10th, 2008: (Morven Park - Leesburg, Virginia)
This growing annual tradition will feature fashion & culinary competitions, concerts, and other live entertainment, and will culminate in the USA versus Italy polo match for the America’s Cup. The two day celebration not only showcases beautiful Loudon County and honors the tradition of polo, but additionally collects proceeds to benefit Journey for the Cure, a non-profit organization that supports the MS Society and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships, June 18th – 22nd, 2008: (Takoma Recreation Center & U. of Maryland)
This four-day aquatics championship will bring teams from all over the world to compete in swimming, water polo, diving, synchronized swimming, and open-water swimming. Competition will take place at the Takoma Recreation Center in Washington, DC and at the aquatics facility at the University of Maryland.

AT&T National hosted by Tiger Woods, July 2nd – 6th, 2008: (Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, MD)
Professional golf returns again to the Greater Washington region over the Fourth of July weekend. This prestigious tournament features the world’s best golf competition while benefiting the Tiger Woods Foundation and various local D.C. youth charities.
